Hello everyone!!

So I am a teen, and I have recently got chickens.
I was wondering...how good or bad is my chicken care. I have gotten all my care and tips from my grandmother, who has raised chickens since she was like 10.

I wondered..how up to date is her and my care.

Note: I did NOT do research as my grandma provided me with care, but I also own hamsters and many people do not know much about them and never research on them, so my grandmas care could be very wrong.

Note: I do not own chickens YET. My grandma does. I used to own some but they died due to a coyote. (I live in ohio) I do own cochins but they live at my grandmas.

Chickens (I plan to get): 3 Rhode Island Reds, 2 Barred Rocks, 2 Americaunas, 2 Bantam Cochins, 1 Bantam Cochin Rooster, Total: 10 Chickens, 7 Regular, 2 Bantam, 1 Bantam Rooster

Enclosure Size: about 14.5 feet by 14.5 feet. Which is about 210 sq ft i think. Their is no wooden floor, the walls are made from mesh except for 1 side, the roof is wood. I cannot at the moment free range...I am sorry..but this is due to my old flock getting hunted by mostly coyote and mink.

Feed: I do not know the brand of feed, but for chicks I am getting this like hard ball tiny pellet things, but for adults I am using some of that, pellets, and cracked corn along with the supplement of every day veggies

Enclosure "Toy Accessories": I plan on making a tunnel thing, having 4 different perches made from wood. I also want to enough nest boxes for every bird plus 2, but with smaller ones for the bantams so they feel cozy (Idc if they use them or not). There is going to be a part of the enclosure, maybe a 1/4 of it, that is going to have some plants for them to run, forage, or do whatever with.

Bedding/Ground: The ground is mostly mud/dirt. There nest boxes are going to be filled with pine shavings.

Water/Food Containers: The food is in one of those bucket things that you fill, flip upside down and the food like drains out, if you know what I mean. The waterer is 2 large pvc pipes that have a thing as the bottom here the chicken goes to drink, their beak pushes on a little lever thing, and the water comes out. (Its like a rabbit or hamster water bottle where the animal pushes a ball with their tongue and out comes water, except its their beak) Its hard to explain.

It looks exactly like this - https://www.google.com/search?q=chi...enUS862US862&safe=active#imgrc=psJO6ZLWXc0mMM

Lighting: There isnt much lighting at all, its mostly natural lighting as the coop walls are made from mesh type material. In the winter and late fall and early spring though there will be 1-3 heat lamps.

I dont know what else to put, but if there is anything you need me to answer ill add it in.

Tell me whats right and wrong and how to improve or what to add or take away.

Good for you in both respecting your grandmother and doing your research. If Grandma's chickens are healthy and happy then she obviously knows her stuff, but nobody knows everything. :D

They are really healthy. But they are older, she has 12 and only gets 1-3 eggs a week. Is that common? I have no idea how old, but she said around 5-6. They are rhode island reds

Yes, older hens lay fewer eggs.

You get the most eggs from a pullet's first year. Then they molt and you get fewer but larger eggs. Then production continues to drop off after each molt.

Many people replace 1/3 of their hens every year to keep egg production up.

Good for you for doing some research before you get your chickens. Can you post some pictures of where they will live?

Read the articles that 3KillerBs listed. If you don't understand something, or have more questions, ask. There are a lot of very knowledgeable people here.

And, :welcome

It is overrun right now by weeds....so id kinda feel embarrassed posting it. I technically CAN. But Id rather not, and wait til i clean it up for this spring

Only thing you might run into is once they destroy the weeds, and they will in only a couple weeks, it will start to stink like chicken poop/petting zoo unless you clean it often or throw down woodchips/straw any time you get a smell starting up.

You may be able to get woodchips for free if you talk to tree trimming and landscape companies in your area. They have to pay to drop that stuff at the landfill, so they're usually happy to drop some free or cheap at your house Just no cedar.

The landscape companies get a LOT of requests for free mulch to be dropped off. Many of them like you to pay them to do so or will drop an entire truck off at a time, can you say several yards of wood chips. Asking them to drop a little pile is probably not going to happen.

On the upside though it does make great mulch for the garden

It's not like you have chickens living in a weed patch. Mine would actually love a nice weed patch.

It really helps everyone to see the proposed living quarters. It's often hard to picture it off a description.

No judgement here. After all you already said you will be straightening it up in spring.
