My chicken died last night. I noticed she was sick late in the afternoon. She was lathargic and vomiting. She also had a large lump on the right side of her neck, which I assume was probably due to a full crop. When I examined her closely yesterday, I also realized she had lice under her wing. She is normally very skiddish and I have a hard time catching her. I have suspected mites or lice in the past because she has been losing feathers. I thought she was molting and have looked for lice, but never saw any until now. I was not able to see lice on my other two hens, but I am treating them today and cleaning the coop anyway.

I am fairly new to chickens and I am trying to figure out what is going on. I recently brought new chicks home, one died and another got sick, but I was able to nurse it back to health. I am worried they have introduced something to my flock. Right now the chicks and hens are housed separatly, but at times they are all outside. The hens roam, but the chicks are in a small fenced area. Does anyone have any ideas about what might be going on? I have two other adult hens and I don't want to lose them, too.

Any insight would be beneficial!

Thanks

How old was she?
Were there any other signs of ill health?
Was she eating and pooping before she got so ill?
Sometimes you just can't be sure of the cause of death, but perhaps someone will come along later and give you an answer.
Sorry for your loss.
