So Caramel is one of our red stars and today she died right in front of us. It was morning feed time and everyone was doing fine, eating breakfast, then all of a sudden she acts as if she's been shot. Screaming, flapping her wings falling over then she's dead. What happened?? She seemed perfectly healthy eating and laying normally. Our Americana also had died months before for no apparent reason one morning in the shed. When we surveyed the area there was a black widow in the laying box. Could this be the culprit? Should we spray the shed before this happens again? These are pretty 1-2 year old chickens and great layers! We don't want to lose anymore!! Thanks.

I would check the carcass for a bite wound if you think it was a black widow bite. You're looking for purple/black and an indent. You could also get a necropsy for about $15 at a vet to make sure you don't have a serious disease in your flock. It almost sounds like a heart attack though.
