I have this Rhode Island chicken that since she was just a few weeks old will out of no where start running frantically and Rams into walls then goes in circles. I'll catch her and she soon calms down. I'm afraid she will break her neck! She just started laying a few weeks ago and last night she had a bad spell and today her egg was soft and broken?? She is so sweet and even cuddles and I'm worried that she will hurt herself. Anyone ever experience this???

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! Sorry to hear you have a strange acting chicken. From what you have described with spinning this could be a neurological problem with her. Is she in a safe enclosed run or is she out free ranging? If out free ranging could something be spooking her and causing her to go into a frenzy? Please do post in the emergencies injuries disease and cure section for more help. Give as much detail as you can and a pic always helps too. Wishing you the very best of luck with her. Enjoy BYC :frow

Welcome to BYC!

That must be worrisome to see your girl act like that. Is it possible she sustained a head injury like a hard head pecking or fall that may have started this? @Yorkshire coop has given you a good place to hopefully find out more.

Good luck to you and your girl.

Poor chicken- does sound like a head injury to me. Any chance you could take her to a vet? She may have swelling of the brain which some vets might treat with prednisone. If so if should only use used under vet's strict guidance. Hope she can be helped.

Please keep me posted on this. My Rhode Island red is doing the same thing and I'm not sure what's wrong with her. She has gotten herself stuck a couple times but always manages to get released. I'm worried she's going to hurt herself :(

I have 6 chickens. 2 rhode islands 2 barred rock and 2 buff orpingtons. They are in a coop with a yard that is 10x18 and is completely predator proof. I live in az where there are coyotes so I can't let them free range. They are now around 6 months old. I got them when they were just over a week old. I have had no problems with any of my other hens. They seem healthy and happy. It's just one of my rhode islands, to my knowledge, has had about 6 of these episodes. When it's over she walks around fine as if nothing had happened.
I did read a little on seizures. I'm wondering if that is what it is. I've been around her every time she does this and you can see it in her eyes when she is about to start. They dialate funny. Of coarse she scares the others and they try to steer clear of her. It lasts maybe a minute and done?? What do you think? Is there a supplement I could give her? Or any suggestions
