My Chicken name Turkey is 10 months old. And over the last month I have noticed that her boobies are bare no feathers covering her chest is this normal..a molting thing? I have not seen her pull those feathers out...so what's the deal? And can anyone tell me what a rather normal laying period is..because she has been laying eggs since Sept 09 and she's up to 114 eggs. No male. She is a single INDOOR chicken. She's a Feather footed Buff Brahma Bantam. I've had her since she was 4 days old. And top things off she crows like a rooster in the morning sometimes?!?!!?? My poor confused chick needs some help.. and so do I.. If anyone could help me it would be GREATLY appreciated!

Is she rubbing her chest against anything while she roosts? That could be the only thing that I can think of off hand that would cause this. Is it only her chest area?
As for the laying my chickens have been laying all winter. Some actually just started the week we had -30 Celcius weather.

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. The only time that she seems to rub her chest area is when she's getting ready to lay another egg and she puts her chest sort of down on the floor and goes in circles. The number of eggs she has layed , is that normal? Do they lay all year long? Because she has been laying eggs steadily for 5 months. Does this make a difference because she is an indoor chicken?? I'm new to chicken ownership. I rescued her from a store that was selling them last easter..she was having her toes pecked off by her cage mates. She is a pretty adult now.. any clue about the crowing like a rooster?

Of course chickens don't have boobies. (Had to get that out.)

Not sure about her problem though. Maybe just a molt? Maybe she is going to go broody on you?

Sometimes hens will make crowing sounds in the absence of a rooster. If a rooster is added, they will generally stop crowing.

Can't say about the "boobie feathers"

It is not unusual for a pullet to lay through her first winter. Not all do, but I'm getting between 3 and 6 eggs a day from my 7 pullets, 39 weeks old. It's after they go through a normal year as adults and then a fall molt that the egg laying seems to stop or really slow down in the cold weather. As I said, not all do. Some pullets either stop or never start that first fall/winter.

I'm not going to attempt your other questions. I don't know those answers.

Has she tried to go broody on ya? They will often pull out their breast (there! I said it!) feathers to snuggle down on the eggs they are incubating.
Crowing in the absence of a rooster is also considered common.

This might not be very helpful seeing that she's not broody if she's still laying, but my Japanese bantam hens go broody quite regularly. I always kick them off the nest and take the eggs, but they will keep trying for a week or so. Usually by day three they are featherless on their lower chest/belly area. It's hard to tell just looking at them, but when you pick them up they are completely bare under there! Once they break from a broody spell the feathers come back after a while.

mine will pluck those in preparation for going broody before they have stopped laying and if I keep removing the eggs it goes on for quite awhile. Silkies are very stubborn and the broody patch is almost a permanent thing with them.
