My Chicken is a Little Skeleton, What is Wrong with Her?

Sorry I forget to to mention that they have pale combs and wattles. Any good livet tonic is needed I guess . Or iton supplement.

I’m sorry about your dear hen. My money is on a reproductive disorder. I base that guess on the combination of:
• bloated abdomen
• wasted breast muscle
• lack of eggs
• lack of appetite

Is an avian vet an option? You might want that fluid tapped to see what color it is. A vet can also palpate the abdomen to feel for masses.

I recently had a hen with similar symptoms. The avian vet was unable to access the fluid; it seemed to be behind a mass. I treated her aggressively with enrofloxacin and ibuprofen, plus some aloe detox. Then I asked the vet for a hormone implant to shut down her reproductive tract. Thankfully, my sweet girl responded to the treatment beautifully. Of course, there is no guarantee it would help your hen, especially if there is something like cancer going on. Depending on whether she is a beloved pet or not, it’s something you might consider.

Can we see a photo of her body language? Is she drooping her tail or wings? Walking like a penguin? Panting? Any other visible signs of illness?

My vet was not an avian vet , he has no experience with chicken but he prescribed me bactim , which I have given them for almost three days then I stopped as they had started crop impaction. Then he shifted them to caricef and flagyl. Again they are going to have the same crop issue. I am now confused between the two either it's a crop issue or an intestinal infection that is blocking the crop... How am I going to continue like this if crop is not working. Switched from one to another antibiotic is not good for their immune system. Now what should I do? Should I continue with flagyl and caricef or should I go with bacteim again?

My birds vent area is dirty, white discharge like poops are there atouarthe vent area. Is it a vent gleet if I am not wrong? If so then, which medicine is required ?

Thank you all so much for the responses! Sorry I don't have more info to give for you guys to go off of.

Her crop has felt pretty normal since I noticed her weight, just flat and mostly soft and empty cuz she is mostly drinking water and not eating anything. It doesn't feel bloated or weird. >.< I hope its not a reproductive problem but I have kinda been wondering about that. I hadn't thought about her maybe having worms.

Me and my husband are about to go on a date to the movies so maybe I will have him take us to the store after to find her some stuff she might eat and I can try eggs when I get back. She has been eating the bread treats good but I was wondering if they can have too much bread? I don't want to cause another problem with her crop or something by giving her too much x.x I also have some Life-Lytes mega tabs I put in my baby chicks water. I will drop one in their water outside too for her.

This is her, I just took it this morning. Her name is Apollo. (She is bug hunting.)

She was kind enough to leave this for me when she was done with her photo shoot...

Not super sure about getting you guys a belly shot of her. I can try but she didn't really want me to pick her up. I don't know if she is in any pain or not and I don't want to hurt her. Thanx again for all the responses.

Her crop appears a bit enlarged in the pic. Her tail is also down, which sometimes is a sign of a reproductive problem. Bread is not good to give, even though they love it, but it can become a big dough ball inside the crop. I would make sure that she has grit available, and offer chicken feed and a little cooked egg.

I'm not sure what an avian vet is. The vets down here that I know of work on horses and cows down to cats and dogs but they don't want anything to do with birds.

Not really any signs of illness with Apollo other than her being a little skeleton and not eating. She is still mingling with the others in her group like normal as far as I have noticed.

Going from Left to Right is Cuddles, Apollo, Peanut, Trouble, and Muno.

I think Carrot Top (5year old roo) thought I was going to hang out with them for a bit so he hurried and brought the other girls from his group over. The alpha hen is the Silver Lace one in the left corner against the wire (Nivens McTwisp). Apollo is the Gold Lace next to Nivens also along the wire above the white Silky (PomPom).

We ended up buying a bag of Mealworms since she has been for sure willing to eat bugs and we got a bottle of Apple Cider Vinegar to try in the water. I have heard it can help kill bacteria in their intestines. Good to know about the bread. They don't get it super often but I was giving Apollo quite a bit last few days just cuz she was eating it. I will stop feeding it to her like a meal. Deff don't want to have a dough ball chicken >.< I will also cook her up some scrambled eggs for dinner.

Lovely birds!!

You can give her some probiotics or yoghurt. It will help their digestive system to be on track again.

My bantams are behaving as samS as yours. But they have pale combs and wattles. I have shifted them on flagyl , seen a bit improvement. They had watery dropping s. Now they have improved a bit in texture.

Try to give her , probiotics , boiled eggs and some veggies she will like that.

Her comb seems fine , have you deworm ed her?


Any one of you can suggest any good liver tonic or how can I boost up their immune system and red blood cells?

Try mixing the chicken feed with some yogurt and see if she will eat it.

My chicken (necropsy) vet suggests giving the flock a Corid treatment twice a year. He says that cocci do build up in their area. I say this because chickens can carry enough cocci to make them feel off but not kill them.
