My chicken is just sitting around, feathers plumped and runny poop?

My little Salmon Favorelle, who is about 4 months olds, did not go in the coop with the other girls last night, she was just sitting outside the hen house on the steps. I picked her up, put her on the roost with the rest of her family, and noticed she had stinky, runny poo caked on her butt. This morning, when I checked on them all, she was the only one still in the roost and now her feathers are all fluffed up, and her poo is still runny. What can I do for her?

In my climate and on my moist soil, I would take a guess at cocci and treat the flock with Corid, particularlly if she's not eating and drinking. They are often described as acting as if cold, hunched down and fluffed up. She's a little old for cocci -- but if she's new to your property, or another strain of cocci might have been brought in somehow, it wouldn't be that odd. But that's just a guesss, and there could certainly be other things wrong.

She should be inside where it's warm with access to food, water and a heat source. If she were mine, she would get dusted with poultry dust, weighed, de-wormed with fenbendazole 10% (Safeguard or Panacur, liquid or paste) at 50mg/kg by mouth (.5ml per 2.2 pounds of body weight) and I'd probably start her on Corid or Amprol (amprolium) for coccidiosis.

I've done the math for the liquid Corid and it's:
  • 2 teaspoons/US gallon for severe outbreaks.
  • 1 teaspoon/US gallon for moderate outbreaks.

If you live in the US, you can find the wormer and amprolium in most feed stores in the cattle, goat and horse section.
