One of my hens, who is about two years old now, has been laying eggs in her sleep while on the roost. All nesting boxes are fully accessible and there are five nesting boxes for five hens. Im not sure whats going on but its really sad to find, what could have otherwise been a perfect egg, smashed to bits every morning.

I had a hen who did this frequently (but not always)...she had shell-less eggs when she did it so I think it was because she couldn't feel the egg coming down. Are the shells intact? Something's definitely going on...hope someone can help. I never figured out what was going on with her...but I certainly gave her lots of time and effort (i.e.. calcium, supplements, special feed...). Good luck.

That is slightly unusual. My suggestion for an easy solution is this............. You know which hen it is... at bed time , just slip her into nesting box. When it is dark in coop, she will most likely stay in nest box, rather than crawl out and onto roost. This may be a case of chicken incontinence

WISHING YOU BEST.

I found one tonight that was somewhat cushioned by poo so it was still intact and it did have a hard shell

thank you but is there anyway to keep her from laying at night all together?
Right now I can think of 3 ways to do it easily..

1. Replace chicken or trade with someone.

2. Make a fashionable chastity mechanism and have her wear it at night.

3. Get the following poster and display in coop. Chickens love music..

OK, now don't get offended.

I JUST WANTED TO MAKE YOU CHUCKLE.

But on a serious side, I think chicken is just not able to contain the egg once it is produced..
WISHING YOU BEST GENUINELY

last night she slept in the nest box and she woke up with an egg under her. hopefully she keeps doing this

I am also curious about this. My hen is a Cream Legbar and lays a beautiful blue egg.. but she frequently has shell less eggs, or lays in her sleep and smashes it. I have added extra calcium and everything I can think of to get her to stop. She is about a year old but just started doing this in the last 5 weeks. Is something wrong with her or is she just a weirdo?
