Help.

My 2-week-old golden penciled hamburg was listless and sleeping standing up for 24 hours or so. She also didn't grow at the same rate as her flock. She was not drinking unless I spoon-fed her. She died 48 hrs later.

All my chickens were vaccinated from Coccidiosis and Marek's.

I read that I should treat the flock with corid (3/4 tsp per one gallon of water) for five days. They are all seem very healthy, happy, and growing well.

Now, my other small breed baby chick is showing the same symptom. She still eats out of my hand when I give her treats. However, she seems to grow much more slowly than the rest.

Her poo seems to be normal... no red dropping...

What should I do before it is too late?

I separate the bigger breed baby chicks from the smaller ones.

btw: the photos were captured when they were few days old.

Where did you get the chicks??? Start by calling wherever you got them and seeing if they can shed some light. I'd seriously like to know where you got them; Gold Pencilled Hamburgs are VERY hard to find; I've been looking for some more for years!!!! Do you have any SavAChick you can give them? You can get it at feed stores.

Hi @calisantosa :frow Welcome To BYC
Can you post some current photos of the chick that you think may be sick, your brooder and of the poop?

If you think you are dealing with Coccidiosis then you may want to treat all the chicks with Corid. Sometimes the vaccine does not take.

Dosage 1 1/2 teaspoons Corid powder or 2 teaspoons of 9.6% Corid liquid per gallon of water. Give for 5-7days as the only source of drinking water.

What are the temps in your brooder and what are you feeding them?

Thank you. What a wonderful idea. Will do... McMurray Hatchery in Iowa. I will also look up SavAChick. Thank you...
Just want to update every one on my little birdie. It appears Birdie doesn't have sour crop. Birdie was doing good this morning. Ate a little and drank water. But, she seemed sluggish again this afternoon. So, no matter what, she is losing the battle (seems like it). While I still have the chance, I gave her amoxicillin. I've got nothing to lose. It won't hurt and it may cure her. I should see an improvement soon or she may not make it. I am crossing my fingers. Will look up SavAChick soon...

btw: Yes, the hatchery gave me something similar to SavAChick. I've been giving it to her as instructed. I also added the vitamin package along with electrolytes to her water... She is definitely having some kind of infection. Sluggish, no energy and sleeping standing up. She is doing much better than the one that died though. Corid might make a difference for her.

McMurray should make good on your purchase. Definitely contact them and let them know. They can advise you further. I don't think giving antibiotics is a good idea without more obvious symptoms. Antibiotics resistance is a big part of why antibiotics are so hard to get for poultry now in the US. Did McMurray sell you a bulk order or can you get as many or as few as you want, now? I would love to have some more Golden Penciled Hamburgs! WE had two several years ago and they were beautiful, sweet, gentle, personable birds. One died from an illness when she was six or seven years old, and the other was killed by a fox. I've never been able to find new ones.
