My 3 year old Red Comet hen has been panting a lot lately. It was a little hot today, but now it is cooling off outside and she is still panting and breathing heavy. She is skinny, but still eats and lays eggs. She has always been a smaller chicken though. I'm getting worried about her so if someone could give me an idea of what is wrong with her or what I could do to help her that would be great.
Thanks in advanced

She could be suffering from a respiratory infection from mold called aspergillosis, especially if there have been wet or moldy conditions. It can be a chronic disease, and removing mold from the environment is about all that can be done. There can be other causes for panting, though. Providing good coop ventilation, no dust from feed or bedding, and keeping the coop dry and clean are always good ways to prevent infections. I would also check her vent inside 1 inch or so for a stuck egg just in case she is egg bound (use a rubber glove.)
