Hello,

I'm new to raising chicken although I've had my 3 hens for almost a year now.

Cutie has what looks like a pigsty on her eyelid...I have no idea how to fix it or get rid of it.

She does not have any form of cold ie cough, sneeze and the eye is not weeping/bubbling.
She is not displaying any traumatisation by this and her eye is still good but she can not see for the swelling.
She still gets out n about n does normal chicken behaviour with the other 2 chickens - scratching, pecking.
She spends a large amount of the day in the pen and is not laying at the moment, I figure she has gone 'clucky' again.

Please help!!

I have pictures but don't know how to upload on here

You could try some antibiotic ophthalmic ointment from the feed store. Should make her feel better, anyway. I believe chickens do get styes.

I have posted 2 pics of my hen on the Facebook page.
Just found out now I can post on here too.

This shows how swollen her eyelid is.

This shows a closer front on view of her eye.

Thanks

Her eye really looks terrible

Is her nose runny at all? sneezing? coughing? I suspect a sinus-type infection and she really should see a vet to get the medicine to treat it. Baytril is a good medicine you can order online for infections like this, you can give it to her orally or inject it, orally is less stressful for both parties!

If she's suddenly spending more time in the pen it is probably because she feels safe in there. She also probably quit laying because she doesn't feel well.

ETA: I don't think this is a stye, this is her whole cheek that's swollen, not just a spot on the inside of her eyelid. It also looks like it may be fluid-filled.

how long has she had that for please?
did it just 'appear' or slowly grow over a number of days/weeks?

Cutie has no symptoms of sneezing or coughing. It has gradually gotten worse over the last 3 weeks, it just seems to be getting bigger.

Will take her to the vet this week.

Hi there, I saw your photos on Facebook, and then found the thread. We had a guy with a very similar problem. He did not make it-but he had other issues as well. I really hope the vet can help you-it looks like if it was drained it would get better; please let us know what the vet says!!! Hope she feels better soon!!
