My chicken (or cockerel) has started behaving strangely.

Hi all!

I have a hen, or what I believed to be a hen, that used to be my mum's that I have inherited. I have a couple of questions about her.

Her coop-mate recently died at the ripe old age of twelve, and since then, the remaining hen has started to crow in the morning when I let her/him out. I'm almost sure I remember her going broody and even laying eggs before, and she's never exhibited cockerel behaviours before recently. She has always had a large comb and wattles. When I took her to the vets, which was mainly to get her old coop-mate checked out, they immediately assumed it was a cockerel, but then when I was surprised, they said that females can also have a large comb and she could be female. It was after the vets visit that she started crowing. Here she is doing it:

And she has recently, every week or so, been going into a strange mode where she will walk around as though she's looking for somewhere to perch (looking up, and sometimes jumping up to higher surfaces, despite having perches in her coop and run) while making the noise in this video:

It doesn't sound like a distressed noise, but she seems very intent on something. It's completely different to her alarm call if she sees a cat, and also different to her food alarm. Can anyone tell me what this might be?

She is otherwise a happy, mischievous, curious chicken.

Here's a few of photos of her/him, in case anyone could sex her from them.

Thank you for any input!

How old? Looks like a hen to me. It’s not unusual for hens to crow, especially when there are no roosters. It’s not harmful or a sign that they’re in pain.

I think she's about 8. That's good to hear. She's now living on her own, do you think she could be bored and wanting company?
