Recently thought I lost one of my prized egg layers ( Actually 2 ) My little red hen went missing about 2 weeks ago . She is prone to jumping the fence . We looked everywhere ,We couldn't find her . Finally we just gave up after a few days .
I thought maybe she fell victum to a chicken hawk . Late saturday evening I was doing my final feed water of chicks a ducklings when out from under the house popped my little red hen . I figure she had went broody , and had a clutch of eggs some where under the house .
Now my little cochin hen she hasn't returned . Last month she went missing and I found her under a shelf in the tool shed with about 22 eggs . I took all her eggs , clicpped her wings and put her back in the chicken yard . She found a way to get out . She has been missing for roughly the same time as the red hen .
I bet she has went broody again . While the red hen didn't last 2 weeks on the nest I know a cochin will go months on a nest . ( I had to cage a cochin hen last year for being broody too long ) I might not see her for months . I hope she comes to her sences and comes out for food .
