Hello there

1 of my 5 chickens has started laying eggs, 1 a day for 9 days now. She announces when she goes into the coop, about 1-2 hours later she will announce that shes done and sure enough there is an egg. For the past 3 days now she will not come out of the coop, shes out in the morning for like 10 minutes then back in and onto her nest. She has not layed in 3 days now. I read about egg's being stuck or sideways, so I felt up there (yes with a glove and XY jelly) and I couldnt feel anything. If you go into the coop and get near her shes yells at us and if we try and get her she pecks at us, normally my daughter who is 9 picks them up all the time and she wants nothing to do with her. We do not have a rooster so none of the eggs are fertile. Why is she doing this. We did have fake eggs thinking she may think she needs to guard it but we took it out 3 days ago.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thx.

( thanks for the advise, I appreciate it I looked up broodiness and it explained a lot.)

Yep, she is broody. She is wanting to hatch her eggs and be a mommy.

Your hen is broody (motherly) which means she wants to hatch some eggs. Even thought you took all the eggs out, she will still sit on her nest for a while. Make sure she eats and drinks and doesn't sit in her nest all day. If possible, take out the nest box. Since she is broody, she will not lay eggs and could take her a couple days to start lying again. The only reason she is pecking at you and yelling is to protect the eggs, which is normal. Just ignore it.

Thank you all for your help.. Yes Im new to this... Thank goodness for Backyard Chickens and the forums.
