I have been raising my flock for about 3 years now, and these two fighting chickens have been together since the day they were hatched. One is a Buff Orpington and the other is a black Andalusian, both hens, both 3 years old. They have never had problems with each other before, but this morning we went outside and the Orpington had blood all over her face and beak, and the Andalusian's face was puffy and scratched, her neck bloody. We assumed something attacked last night, maybe trying to steal eggs, or maybe they killed a mouse. But then began to attack each other. They were jumping up and clawing at each other's faces. We have separated the Orpington from the rest of the flock and are hoping that the Andalusian won't attack anyone else, as she was only targeting the one hen. They both look pretty bad off, and we are planning to bathe them both and clean up the wounds. Is this just them re-establishing the pecking order, or is something else wrong? I don't see why the pecking order would be it now, because they've lived together for so long and it has already been established. Does anyone have any ideas on what they could be fighting about?
