A couple nights ago, a raccoon got into the henhouse. Someone hadn't closed the door all the way, and one of the chickens turned up dead. When I noticed that some of the others had injuries, I attributed it to the raccoon as well. I separated them, and cleaned the wounds with hydrogen peroxide. But more chickens kept turning up with the same wounds, fresh ones, days afterwards, even though the coop was locked. And they were all the same: pecked out feathers, skin, and a layer of muscle in a circularish place on the back. And the four that I had separated, which I was keeping in one place because I don't have the accommodations to keep each chicken separate, had fresh blood flowing.

Help! What can I do to stop my chickens from cannibalizing each other?

I included a picture, though I realize now the angle's a bit weird. This one got pecked right behind her wing.

Please, guys. Any ideas? I'm terrified and horrified and don't know what to do. Any hints would be much appreciated. I added more cut up meat to their diet, hopefully that will help...

They may be stressed out. The predator attack could have made them that way. Is there anyway to confine the pecked ones and let them heal? How many birds do you have?

By the wsy I read that once they taste blood the cannibalism can start. I don't know if you let them out but id let them out a few hours a day and harvest worms. Red worms if you think its protien.

My chickens recently picked on one of my hens (I hav 3 chickens) and she had a huge gash on the top part of her tail. We have confined her to a dog crate in our garage and she has grown back her feathers.

It also happened a few years ago with another set of chickens and once they had seen and tasted the blood they couldn't stop themselves from attacking the hurt one. It is hard to say why they do this. Hope I Helped A Little :)
