My chickens are making a weird noise can someone please tell me why?

My hens make a little noise when I come out to feed them treats. The rooster makes the same sound but it sounds deeper. To me this is the sound my rooster makes to call the girls when there's food around or just to call them to where he is. The sounds you hear may be normal "coming of age" sounds. I would monitor you flock for signs of illness like laying around not doing anything or not eating. If they are acting normal in every other way, I would just observe. When the birds make those noises, watch to see what they're doing and if they change what they're doing. It may be simple communication between birds.

Also, "cull" means to do away with. Give away, rehome or euthanize. I do not recommend this for your birds at this time. "Closing the flock" means killing your entire flock.

I have one hen that does the squeaky toy noise.
Not all the time but she often has a huge crop stuffed with food and I notice it more then.
I tend to think she has scratched her her throat or is squishing her voice box, but it is when she overeats.
Don't know if this helps.

Okay Calm Down and slow down a minute.

First, you described mating behavior

Secondly, they do make a squeaky sound and a rooster is deeper voiced than a hen usually...sometimes it is dirt in their nose or water or dust DO NOT jump to the conclusion anything is wrong. Start eliminating possibilities

Third - do not worry about culling and closing flocks just yet until you determine IF and WHAT is wrong, if anything but Culling means to remove from the flock either by selling or dispatching (killing) Closing a flock means you close your flock to any new birds or any of yours leaving this includes offspring. The flock lives with you, stays there in its entirety and dies there. It is CLOSED no incoming birds no outgoing birds

Fourth, go over to the illness and injuries forum...read the sticky at the top, answer the questionnaire use the subject "is my flock sick" and see what comes about because there is far more info needed to determine an illness and trying to diagnose what illness it may be

Oh chickens do not get colds but they can get pheunmonia and respiratory illnesses. Chickens do sneeze and 98% of the time it means nothing more than dust or water up their nose. Do not medicate with antibiotics until you know what you are treating because some work for one illness but do nothing for another.

Could it be like honking? As my hens were getting older, it seemed they were trying out their "voice" and a honking sound (kinda like a duck) came out. It could possibly be something as simple as that, just keep an eye on them for other "symptoms". Hope everything is okay with your flock

It does sound like they are sneezing. I have only heard one of mine sneeze, maybe three times. It sounds like a quick sqweak, odd for it to be coming out of a bird. Since several of yours are doing it, maybe something in their pen is making them sneeze, like really dusty bedding flying around. Just observe them to see when they do it and what else is going on. If they seem to have other signs of illness, like discharge from nose and eyes, not eating, runny poo more than normal, feathers ruffed up, or not wanting to move around, then they are probably sick.
