My chickens aren't using the roost is this typical?

I have 6 and 9 week old pullets. I have roost in the coop that they had been using. The last few nights they have been sitting up in the rafters of the coop where we have a window sitting that slides into the window frame and on a board that we have slid up there that we sat on the top of a feed bucket. Is this normal for them to do this?

Chickens are crazy sometimes. I have a group of nearly 3-year-olds that never roosted. I can't get it through their heads that they are supposed to be roosting at night. As a result of this, I am training my newbies to roost before I introduce the oldsters to them. I am hoping that maybe seeing the newbies roosting over them will convince the old ladies to start roosting. Can you teach an old chicken a new trick?
