My chickens have mites!! :@ I just went to muck the coop out and i saw these tiny black mites crawling all over the nest boxes. I have flubenvet so I will treat the chickens with that and dust them with DE, but I want to treat the coop with something that will definitely kill the mites. I know you can buy lice and mite sprays designed for poultry but I haven't got any to hand at the moment, so would it be safe to use a household flea spray? It's one of those long-acting ones with a growth inhibitor and it is safe to use with indoor pets around as long as the room is aired thoroughly before letting the pets back in, so would it be safe to use this on my chicken coop after I clean it out? as long as I air the coop before they go to bed? Thanks!

Yep, no big deal, I've used Adams flea and tick spray in a pinch. Just treat everything (and everyone) and then re-treat in about a week to get any stragglers.
I think this is something every chicken keeper deals with at some point. I've started dusting my nests with DE every few weeks and mixing herbs into the nesting material as a preventative measure, it seems to be helping. I have a lot of broody hens, and they seem to attract mites (and lice, ick) but regular maintenance keeps them at bay.

Good luck :)
