I'm sorry, LOL. As my Dad would say, my redneck is showing!! Yes, grinnies are chipmunks.

We've always called them grinnies, so it just came out that way.

I guess it would be a western PA thing.

I was reading you rpost and wondering the same thing. I'm so glad I know what you are talking about now:)
I am also glad to see that it' snormal for chickens to be little Rambos. I guess I will have to just get used to it. Maybe he will kill snakes too, that would be nice!

What about slugs? Will the slime bother them? I have several in the unit where I store all their food. They hide under the plastic containers. I've thought about giving them to the chickens, but didn't know about all the slime. It would be a good way to get rid of them. They're a nasty mess and leave little droppings all over.

thanks for explaining what a grinny was.........I sure didn't know. My dear sweet chickens become monsters when a little frog or toad is hoppin by...............normal behavior.....just so hard to watch sometimes........Now if they would just attack the cats !

Mocking birds are very agressive and annoying.
I'e not only seen them swoop back and forth over a cat, pecking its back and head.. I've also been swooped at.

I can see how your roo could see the bird as a threat, and deal with it accordingly.

When our girls were still a couple months old they almost managed to kill a Scrub Jay! They are very close to our cat (sometimes I think that they believe he is also a chicken, or maybe that they are cats!) and watched him chase and knock down the bird. When it landed on the ground, they all ran for it, trying to attack it. Luckily we were able to intervene and save the bird!

I don't know if they were trying to imitate the cat or if they were just being fiercely territorial.

Chickens will attack/eat snails, slugs, rodents, reptiles, you name it. They love those big green tomatoe hornworms. Those big Jeruselem crickets (some people call them potato bugs) are also a big favorite. I uncovered a rat's nest with baby rats in it. The girls made short work of it. I also saw them catch and eat a baby gopher. They can be pretty vicious. They love protein. Scramble up some eggs and toss them out - step back and watch a chicken riot.
