I do the same thing with my girls. I grew up in Oakland County Mi. also. In Highland, then moved to Clarkston when I was older.

My hens just started laying and I have noticed a lot of this squating behavior myself. They only do it to me though....not my son or husband.....guess I am the roo! I give them a little back rub and tell them they are good girls.

Mine do that for me all the time. I give them a rooster rub down where I pat them on the back and ruffle their neck feathers I then grab the clump of tail feathers and wriggle it around a bit and let them go. They fluff their feathers back out and strut away all satisfied with the attention. Once they've gotten some attention they are done with me unless I have some treats. In the chicken world treats trump everything.

I do exactly what bakerjw does. A little skritch to the neck, another at the base of the tail feathers and then a pat on the back, telling 'em they're good girls.

However, I've recently learned that the "feather fluff" action with which they respond before walking away is NOT just fixing the "bed feathers look" but the actual mechanism by which the hen moves the rooster's sperm up into her body.

Hussies.

OH WOW!!! LOL!! I had no idea I was the rooster, lol funny, but odd! We have been getting eggs for about a month! Thank You all for your answers, my kids think its extremly funny that I am the rooster!

I never knew about the egg thing that came in hand with squatting, that's cool !

I just thought that my chickens were "trained" like that because whenever i said "sit!" they all squatted for me, its pretty funny
