I only ever provide a dust bath for incubator-hatched chicks, for the first few weeks when they're often indoors for a good part of the day.
After that, they have claws and beaks and they're perfectly capable of finding somewhere to dig their own dust bath.

Yeah I can't tell you how many times I turned an ankle in that one, or nearly fell down because of it. And believe me, you don't want to fill up a hole like that with dirt, that just makes it more attractive, and the more they thrash around in it, the bigger the hole becomes!
