My chickens are 7 months old and aren't laying and they are Sussex and Rhode island red .
Thanks

My RIR's didn't lay until just after 8 months. Think of it as a good sign, the longer it takes them to start the less problems they tend to have with it.

If their combs and wattles are big and red and they squat for you they should lay soon.

I completely feel your pain. Our chickens are about 24 weeks as well and only one has laid one egg, it was a double yolk which I assumed to be a good omen. It has been four days and we still have nothing. This is our first go with chicks and I am hoping we score big soon!

Do they ever free-range? My RIR found a out of the way spot to claim as her nest. When I found it there were 7 eggs in it.. and I didn't even know she was laying.

The first 1-2 months they can be on and off to figure out their cycle. After 2 months it will be like clockwork.

I have 10 EE's that were shipped to us around April 10th. No eggs yet and I expected that we would see one around the 15th. They have me on pins and needles!

A local farmer advised touching their heads with an egg to start them laying. I love mountain lore! I am seriously starting to think about doing it!

You never know, and it won't hurt to try. I got meat chicks and my girls started hanging out with them, next day I got my first egg. Then red waddles and combs growing everywhere and all but 2 of mine started laying within 2 weeks. Nature is a funny thing.
