After a short journey from OH to SC my chicks arrived today (less than 24 hours after shipping). After showing them water and doing a once over I settled them into their new brooder. Right away all were moving around and drinking, within an hour all were eating. All seem healthy and happy, though of the Gold Laced polish seems to have a small scab on the back of its head. It is hard to tell but I did not want to handle them to much their first day. She is still eating and drinking so hopefully it will resolve itself.

We welcome (13 + 1 mystery chick) our new little guys to our farm! Here are some of their first pictures:

This is my little Buff Laced polish pullet, she is already a favorite. Very friendly little girl.

Wow! I am excited for you :). The scab on the chicken's head should heal up, it might have been from a peck or shipping. They all look very healthy and I wish you the best of luck!

Happy they arrived safe.... Im excited for you, they look great , I cant wait till minds arrive in a few days!

The scab is probably from other chicks or shipping. I was looking at you pictureas and it looked like you had a paper towel floor. If you do I would strongly sugest you switch to white shavings. The chicks can get their nails caught in it and rip them out trying to get them out.

Thanks everyone! This is my first round of raising chicks, but I have 6 that are 19 weeks. I will let the scab be then, I assumed it was fron shipping or anouther chick. Though so far no one seems to be picking on anyone else.

Chickenlove3 I do have paper towls down. My research said to lay paper towels the first day then switch to shaving, other said to not use shaving until they are weeks old. Does anyone else have an opinion on this? Thanks though as I did not think about them ripping their nails out.

Yes they are. After much research I decided to give myer a try and I am glad I did. I recieved a text message yesterday @ 4:30 saying they had shipped and I picked them up today @ 11 am.

I have never heard of them ripping a nail out on paper towels and I have been chickin for quite a few years. I always start them out the first few days on the corrigated cardboard (the kind they sell to make the big circle brooder things) or paper toweling, never had an issue.

I have always put minds on shaving this first day I got them, I leave the lamp on to make it warm, they all seem to love it, I never had any problems or losses because of it, I also give them a little bit of suger water to perk them up! hope this helps
