My 4 week old chicks have been out in the coop since Saturday, and I've been turning on one of those 250 watt red heat lamp bulbs for them at night so they don't get too cold. Last night was kind of warm so I didn't turn it on until 9:30. I just plug it in at the house and it turns on at the coop at the back of the yard. Well I thought I'd go out to the coop to peek in the window at them to check on them. When I got there, they were going crazy making all kinds of noise and running around. I thought there must be a predator in there, or one of them was stuck somewhere. So I went inside and knelt down and talked softly to them, asked them what was wrong (like they could tell me), and they all crowded around around me and slowly started to calm down. It was like they were waiting for me to read them a bed time story or something
Some of them even let me touch them for a second
It was the wildest thing ever. They all just stood there close by me and looked at me and listened. I'm guessing that because I turned the light on at 9:30 they had already been in the dark for about an hour to an hour and a half, maybe the light scared their little butts.
I was looking at them close and it appears they are all feathered out so I went ahead and turned the light off and went back and listened, they were fine. I guess I must be their daddy.
