Hi guys, I have recently hatched 7 chicks, two Sussex, two wyandottes, a vorwerk, an Orpington and a legbar, for a friend of mine who would like to restock her flock.
I have heard that the way to tell their gender is when their combs start growing-apparently males get theirs first.. However I just wondered if there was a way of telling their genders sooner? They are 3 weeks old today, and there are some wattles and combs peeking out already.. Can you tell by behaviour?
Thanks

You can look through this for some clues, but most of this doesn’t really kick in until they are a bit older than yours. Some chicks are a lot easier to sex than others too. Normally I can tell with mine at about 5 weeks, but occasionally I have some that take a lot longer.

If you are already noticing combs and wattles, there is a really good chance those are male. No guarantees, but a real good chance, especially with wattles.

I would not count on behaviors at all at that age.

Thank you! Yes I had a suspicion that those are males, also they are bolder and more likely to leap around and annoy the other quieter chicks.
