The local pet shop told me to feed them some 'dog roll' which would be high in protein and get these girls back into shape quicker. Apparently the high protein food will help encourage them to lay eggs too. Has anyone tried this?

Lots of people feed cat food for the high protien when the chickens are moulting. Cat food in the US typically has a lot more protien that the stuff they sell for dogs, but those "rolls" of food for dogs are high in protien and meat, so I would think they would be very good.
