My Colored Ranger ~vs~ X-rock Experience

Salt and Light, do you have any pics of the birds before they were butchered, I'm thinking about colored broilers too.

These are three of my colored rangers at 12 weeks. The first is a female, the other two are males. The first two were victims of a stray dog, the 3rd went to freezer camp a couple of weeks after this photo was taken and dressed out at over 8 pounds.

S & L, sorry, but I do not always make myself clear when writing. I have never raised the rangers, only the cornish as meat birds. I am thinking of raising a batch of the colored possibly when weather is too hot for Cornish. Ah, I now see where I went wrong.... I ment to use CR as Cornish Rock, not Colored Rangers. My apologies on the confusion!!!! Did I mention I was new to this?

I raised CX, Colored Range Birds (from J&M), and Dixie Rainbows and Red Rangers from S&G. Next year it will only be CX and the colored range birds from J&M. My J&M birds all matured within 2 weeks, 80% were ready to process at 11 weeks. The other 20% were hens that were processed a week later. My goal was 4-5lb birds which the J&M birds met or exceeded. The size was very consistent even with our funky cool summer. The birds were free-ranged 8-12 hrs a day from 4 weeks until 10 weeks. The lesson I did learn at about 6 weeks is that they did require more feeder space than the CX. They were fed 2x's a day and I started noticing a lack of consistency in size, within a week of adding another feeder they were consistent in size again. This probably would not have been an issue if I had grain in front of them 24/7, but I wanted to encourage free ranging as much as possible.

My brother in law (lives mile and a half away) he did 150CX and 100 red broilers hes was disappointed with the reds at 16 weeks were average of 5 lbs the CX at 9 weeks were 6-7lbs some bigger

the reds then of coarse ate about twice as much feed

Taste wise the red are much more flavorful then the CX
im going to give the colored rangers a shot next spring split 100 with my brother in law

a guy i know raised 100 colored rangers (from J M) this summer i have gotten a chance to taste them but he said is really good im not sure how much feed he used but he butchered them at 14weeks and they averaged 7.5 lbs or so

Unfortunately, I did not take any pics of my CR's. But, they look similar to TimG's pictures. Looking at the pics reminds of how pretty and diverse the colored rangers are.

This is an interesting hobby we have....
