I have 4 coturnix. i am pretty new to quails, these are my first ever. I originally wanted only a few, like 2 to 4 maybe. as luck would have it, 13 of them hatched. i knew i had to sell them but had some favorites i wanted to keep, so i marked them with purple on the back of their necks to let people know which i was keeping. that was completely unnecessary because a lady i know well called me up and asked for ALL the ones i didn't want to keep. i ended up with 4 birds with purple on them
anyhow, i decided it was high time i cleaned out their cage because i went from 12 quails to 4, plus one button and 2 chickens. i cleaned it pretty good. i used piping hot water and got ALL the poop out of their wire cage floor. i cleaned up the poop pan with Clorox and rinsed it thoroughly. after letting it dry i sprinkled some borax on it. i ended up with a nice, clean, good smelling cage for them.
now, i've washed chickens before, but never quails. they were filthy, poopy and stinky! i wasn't sure how they would like it. they were the most skiddish and scared little things! even my little button quail LOVED to be held, but the coturnix, they HATED it. i did it anyway. filled a clean wash basin up with 1 inch of warm water and a pinch or borax.
i decided to do two at a time, my lovely sweetheart boyfriend voulenteered to help. he rather likes the quails. i was so surprised! they LOVED the nice warm bath? they were having a good old time! walking around in the water, getting comfy, trying to take naps. they looked like the outside birds when the come to a birdbath! the two that were waiting for the bath saw what was happening and couldn't help them selves. they few right in! i was astonished! even the little button quail joined in!
they also seemed to like the blow dryer, too. usually when i hold them they would struggle alot but they seemed to enjoy it! when they were all back in the cage they fluffed up and started preening. usually, they peep alot, but they were silent and starting to go to sleep. since then they don't mind being handled and don't run away when i go to grab one. they take a nap in my hand! what gives??? do they like baths THAT much?? they hated people before and now they love us. quail excperts, please tell me...
WHAT GIVES???
