If she's almost a year old, I might expect her to be done growingOver a year ago I bought some Sapphire Gem chicks and one of them developed scissor or cross beak. The hen has been able to eat fine in container with high walls. She also drinks water with ease as well. However, I’ve noticed that she hasn’t gained any weight and she’s almost a year old without laying any eggs. I give wet food but that doesn’t seem to work.
Any suggestions to help my hen grow?
So the other Sapphire Gem hens are laying eggs while she is not, I think she stuck during the pullet stage, meaning she hasn’t reach maturity yet.If she's almost a year old, I might expect her to be done growing
I'm guessing that you compared her to your other Sapphire Gem's, and she's smaller?
Are the other Sapphire Gems laying eggs?
That makes sense. So the other Sapphire Gem hens are laying eggs while she is not, I think she stuck during the pullet stage, meaning she hasn’t reach maturity yet.
In total I have 8 Sapphire Gem hens which lay every day. However, this cross beak hen has never laid a single egg, she just eats all day in a bin and comes out only to drink water. I bought a trash can sized plastic bin to eat out of, all I do is fill it with crumble feed. That makes sense.
But with those red wattles in the picture, she might finally be getting close to laying, especially because the days are getting longer at this time of the year (if you're in the Northern Hemisphere like I am.)
How do you know she isn't laying? Most chickens take a day off here and there, so it can be hard to tell how many are laying if you just count eggs each day.
