My dads dog got into the neighbors chicken,

I have had a neighbors dog come over my fence and kill some of my birds. My neighbors acted as if it were my fault and never offered me a penny OR even an apology. Unfortunately, I have to play nice, as they are also the in-laws. That being said, I commend your dad for wanting to do what is right. It is sad, but dogs will do what comes natural if they get loose. You said there were two dogs though...I'd offer the price for 10 hens instead of ALL of them. There was another responsible party involved, and to pay for someone else may encourage someone else to be negligent with their dog again since someone willingly paid for their mistake once. I would readily pay slightly above the fair share of half of the chickens according to what they go for in your area, as a peace offering to the neighbor along with a heartfelt apology as well. To pay for all of the damage may make the neighbor feel uncomfortable it would me if it had been my birds. I'd see the offer to pay half of the damage as honorable and apologetic for an accident considering the dog was contained but broke out on it's own. You just have to be careful not to make too big a deal or too little of a deal out of the offer. Make them feel respected but not feel bad for taking too much. Does that make sense?

I agree with the last post, pay for half.. the fact that he already re homed the dog shows he is doing his best to make sure it doesn't happen again. and unless these were show birds of some kind the neighbor will be more than happy withe the offer of $10 for half the birds. they will more than likely order chicks, maybe even try some new breeds. I know I would feel very good Knowing I didn't need to worry about the dog getting loose and having a replay.

Okay problem solved they(both dog owners) where able to find a flock of 26 birds to replace the original flock, and because of the price difference have also provided a couple hundred pounds of layer feed.
I believe that all parties involved where happy as they all went out to dinner last night and their new chicken friend bought.
I just wish we all had neighbors like this group!

When my neighbors birddog got loose and slaughtered a dozen of my chickens, the dog was proud of himself and let me get close enough to grab his collar------the owners name and number was on the collar. I called and told him about it, he said he'd be right over. I tied his dog up in the front yard next to the pile of dead chickens. He drove over on his ATV with his 9 year old son! The expressions on his face was priceless!!! He offered to pay for the chickens and I asked only that he try not to let it happen again and I mentioned that in the past I was forced to shoot rampaging dogs. That was several years ago and he has been good for his word, his dogs haven't repeated the situation, we're on good terms even. (I threw a few more eggs on the incubator that year)
