Hello All,
After much research, my husband and I have settled on 5 baby chicks. We are just beginning this venture, and very much appreciate the vast resources/information available on this website.
We've chosen the following to begin our BYC journey: 2 Golden Comets, 1 Golden Laced Wyandotte, 1 Barred Plymouth Rock, and 1 Speckled Sussex. It was a tough decision, but after reading about the breeds, we just had to narrow down our list!
If any of you have any of the aforementioned breeds, please reply with your fanciful anecdotes about their intelligence, gentleness, hilarity, spunkiness, egg-laying... or whatever! I can't wait to hear what I'm getting into!
If you're wondering 'why' the Speckled Sussex, here is an anecdote I read that helped us decide:
"If chickens could be livestock guard dogs, our two would qualify! Given the chance, I believe they'd wear little police caps and badges around the yard. They're fiercely loyal to the flock and they're the final say on accepting someone new. They're chatty as chatty can be, and follow us wherever we go even without treats."
...I mean, I just wanted a little chicken policeman, what can I say?
