My Dear Old Egg Breaking Hen,
why must you break my eggs yet again?
I thought we'd moved past this dreadful habit
but now when I see an egg, I must grab it.

I get it, having 22 sisters is tough-
and laying an egg every day is quite rough.
But you get pellets, scratch and cracked corn too-
and breaking good eggs is simply taboo.

You strike in the day like a fox in the night.
You leave no traces nor a shell in sight.
This well-behaved flock I thought I knew-
yet who you are I haven't a clue.

I built you shelter, a coop and a home-
and plenty of land for you to roam.
I give oyster shells, ash, dust and grit-
yet this egg breaking crime you still commit.

Ok, I'll admit if I knew who you were...
a minor chicken tragedy might just occur.
But you my hen, you are most clever.
And I fear that finding you I may never.

So although I doubt that you’ll relent,
I warn you, I too can be vigilant.
So I will sit and be patient ‘til then,
My Dear Old Egg Breaking Hen.

This is my hen who I always have this same talk with.
