Yeah this was a surprise to me. My disabled RIR has been sitting in one of my nesting boxes for at least a week now, and has not moved at all. I thought she was on her way out, but no, I think she may be broody. She doesn’t mind when I touch her, because she’s used to it, but she seems bothered when the other hens are “in her space”. I today was able to look under her, and realized she only had a ceramic egg under her, and that she has plucked the feathers from her chest. I gave her some eggs that were recent laid so her efforts aren’t in vain, but waiting for the other hens to lay their eggs so I can have her sit on them.

After ms Bullwinkel (buff Orpington) was spooked off her eggs, I wasn’t expecting any more broody hens. I was expecting potentially Rocky (the barred rock) to go broody, but since it was late in the season I wasn’t expecting much. But the last hen I expected to go broody was Mumma hen, the disabled RIR, which is a breed not at all noted for going broody.

Anyways, will update about how it goes. I am happy Mumma hen will finally be able to be just that, a Mumma hen, even if she can’t move around easily.

Also hopefully I’m in the right thread!
