My usually well mannered dog who dose just fine with the chickens attacked my ducklings!! they were in an enclosed area to protect them form other predators but she found a way in and pulled most of the feathers out of one side of my ducking. his skin is also gone and I can see the muscle beneath. I am afraid I should put him down but the thought breaks my heart. Should I attempt to keep him clean and see if it will heal or would he be in pain the whole time? I do not see much bleeding really its more like she licked his skin away. HELP!!! Lauren

You should really tell your dog who is boss... It would be better to have a dog who is scared of ducklings than a dog who will kill them.
I have heard of people that had a dog that kept killing chickens and they got a dead chicken, and punished it with the chicken and the dog never touched a chicken again.
Now about the chicken. My advice would be to clean the wound, bandage it, and maybe ask a vet or something as I don't know much..
You say he wasn't bleeding? Maybe there is one layer of skin left on his wound? I really hope he survives.

Good luck!

That is a bad wound, but I wouldn't try putting him to sleep just yet. You can get some ointments at the feed store, clean the wound and put the ointment on it. I've brought a hen back from a similar injury and she's just fine now. Don't worry about trying to stitch the wound, my hen grew new skin and feathers over open spot.

First thing I would do is put gauze over the would to prevent flies from laying eggs. Then check daily to make sure the area is staying healthy and clean.

Tried the whipping the dog with the dead chicken. Didn't work. Tried tying the dead chicken around the neck of the dog for several hours, hurt her feelings something awful. Didn't work either. I have 2 yellow labs that keep my yard littered with skunks, possums, ground hogs, armadillos, etc.. so when a chicken gets out they do what is natural to them. I like to think they keep predators from breaking in the coop. Unfortunately they keep the chickens from breaking out!!! I just had to secure my coop and buy more chickens.
