My Dog Brought Home a Duck....help!

OK, now it's weirder. Now the duck is sleeping on the porch with the dog. Daisy has learned to run away and around a corner when she's had enough. The duck can't keep up! I agree with you all about it being aggressive. No doubt about it. I'm hoping it wears off soon, but meantime Daisy has her escape route planned and it seems to be working.

I thought that it appeared that the duck seemed quite lost during the video when the dog went away. Like "Hey where did my buddy go?"

If the duck were hurting the dog I think that the dog would yip or growl at the duck as they would warn a pup that gets fresh. My dog would probably give a warning snark if the duck were hurting her.

Might be interesting to see what the outcome is without interference.

I'm not sure I agree here. I've seen puppys together & they can tear into one another pretty good. This duck is after all a duck & not another puppy & watching the video the dog putting it's mouth around the ducks back at the top of the video IMO is him giving a visual warning of his capabilities. The rest of the time he is looking to the humans & running from this duck as a means to not be aggressive, Leaving them without interference might be fine as long as they don't mind loosing the duck...

This dog is very well behaved though & if they are found sleeping alongside one another & the dog is smart enough to out run &/or hide from this duck & so I do think it's those there with him that are best able to judge the situation. I will say though that I have golden retriever & they are side by side with chickens all the time etc & I'm not sure I'd leave them completely to their own devises for all that long a period of time. They are *bird dogs*.

I haven't watched the video, but I just want to say WOW you have a well-behaved dog. It sounds like he really doesn't want to do anything to upset anyone, but I agree with Mom2Cool that it might just be a matter of time. A dog doesn't have to be trying to hurt a duck in order to do it. My dog weighs 10 lbs, and I still watch her around them (especially the babies) because although she doesn't mean to hurt them, she could by accident or if startled.

Also, if the dog is looking to you to help, I think you should help. It's probably stressing him out, not knowing how to deal with the situation. Maybe you can teach the duck not to do the annoying behaviors (nipping the dog's mouth, etc.)? I don't know much about duck training--I haven't done much of it myself--but I do know that having a lonely duck following you around nipping at you (I lost my flock to a fox one time, and had one very lonely little duck left and this is exactly what she did to me) can be exhausting and annoying. I'd hate for the dog to lose patience and hurt the duck by accident, and everyone loses--the dog gets in trouble, the humans are sad about the duck, and the duck gets hurt.

But I also agree that the people who are there have to be the judges of the best course of action, as you know your dog and you can see the interaction. Good luck to you!

Not sure, I have a lake out back but I have NEVER seen ducks on it. We live pretty far out in the sticks. We do have neighbors, but they have horses and goats. No ducks. This is so weird!!

shesell with this looking like a domestic breed maybe the thing was just a bit too aggressive with their other animals/dogs & so they dropped it on your driveway while you were out? If you have chickens & they see you live on or by a lake maybe they thought you'd just take it in. Your dog does seem to be able to handle the duck but I'd keep an eye on them. It's amazing to me how accomidating retrievers can be & again he deserves a soup bone.

Get the duck some duckie friends! I'm sure he'd love some girls, and probably leave the dog alone after he's got his harem.

Good luck with it. I'd love to have a drake wander onto my property, and I'm sure my duck hens would love that too!

The drake was probably raised with and imprinted on a dog and thinks it is a dog.

I have a khaki campbell drake who was raised an only duck and when I got him he didn't know what the other ducks were. He thought he was a people. It took forever for him to learn that he is a duck.

He is not afraid of me and bites my ankles and weaves in and out of my feet as I am walking. He is not being aggressive to him, he is just interacting the way he knows. He is going to end up tripping me in the mud one of these days.

He is lucky I adore him.

Hugo used to sit on the steps of his previous home and wait for the UPS man to get out of his truck. 4 pound Hugo would launch himself off the porch and chase the driver back to his truck.

The driver would lock himself in the truck and use his cell to call the house and demand that the killer duck be contained.
