I think it depends on the dog. I have given rawhides for a time, but they kept trying to woof them down as fast as they could once they'd work on them into a nasty gooey mess. They would choke or have trouble going, or have runny stool.
I later went to beef knee caps and got nothing but compliments and inquiries from three different Vets. The knee caps held up and they could work on them for a day or so.
But with those you also have to watch because they whittle them down to small rocks and once they get to swallow size they don't care they just start gulping. So I would always take them away at that point.
Later I had to stop giving even those as one of my small breeds fractured a tooth and so if I gave it to the other you know what happens next heh...
