DO YOU FEED YOUR DOG COOKED CHICKEN BONES

She did a lot of surgeries for blockages mostly dogs eating parts of toys, socks, underwear.....but I don't remember one specifically to repair for a puncture from a bone, at least while I was there. I just remember her talking on and on about how great raw chicken necks were for teeth tartar and not to feed cooked chicken bones. She did also work at an emergency vet clinic but I didn't specifically ask about any surgeries caused by cooked bones so I don't know .

OK thank you. I had a family friend say he thinks his shepherd died from it but that was a long time ago, he's the only person I have ever met that actually thinks it happened. thank you for your information. I dont feed my dog the cooked chicken bones I dont think it is worth the risk.

We spent over $6000 to save a dog from acute hemorrhagic gastroenteritis from swallowing a rock. Yes a 1" rock and an 85# dog.

Yes a rock is a rock and a bone is a bone but the surgery or hospital treatment for what they cause in damage is the same.

It did a lot of damage to both her guts and my wallet.

I think Vets really will stick it to you when they can. The animal shelter here tried to charge me $150 bucks cause my dog chased my turkey out of the yard. I told em im not attached to the turkey like that you can keep it then. They eventually gave it back for 20 bucks. But they try to get you for as much as they can, I woulda had to pay whatever if it had been my dog they had and not the turkey. The vets the same way, they see your dog is hurting and then soak you. MY friends dog got attacked by coyote and she had to pay 1500 a few weeks ago and the dog had health insurance. they really take advantage I think. Maybe you know your vet or dont mind or whatever idk your situation but I have had other unscrupulous dealings with vets where they really are awful. I hope your dog is doing better.

Now I feed my dog everything from the chicken EXCEPT cooked chicken bones. There is a lot of BS out there that make people scared to feed their dog raw chicken and raw chicken bones but it is perfectly safe. I have always heard that there is an issue with cooked chicken bones. My understanding has always been, that cooked chicken bones are porous and when the dog eats them they can splinter and I have heard they can get stuck in the dogs throat, or they can puncture some part of his internal organs during digestion, or something of that nature. It is not a danger with raw chicken bones, it is created from cooking them. And I know someone will feel they must say, I wouldn't risk it blah blah, but the fact is, it is not a risk to feed the dog raw bones.
I want to know, does anyone have specific knowledge regarding this. Is it even really dangerous? Is what I have typed here regarding the possibility of splintering correct? I have a family friend who says this killed his german shepherd but I am skeptical. I am looking for factual knowledge, not what you have heard or read. But anyone who has actual knowledge and can answer this I would appreciate. I wonder if it is not just some old wives tale or something like that. I have a 170lb Mastiff that can eat any bones i give him, but I have always steered clear from giving him cooked chicken bones, I dont want to give them if there is a real risk beyond any normal bone he eats.


I am going to ad on here and say Many many of you are very confused and simply wrong. None of you has sited any sources and are simply responding with what you have heard or what you think. It is a fact that they can eat the bones raw. And really IDC what you think about the raw bones that wasn't what I was asking about anyways. The only person who has responded with anything of substance is Spotthecat and although I disagree at least they have some reasons there.

I am like you and hear/read that bones are bad but my dog eats whole (sometimes live) quail...feathers, bones and all.

I do not give my dogs any bones on purpose.

She spent 6 days in the emergency hospital with 3 IV pumps running to keep her blood pressure up. She went from looking a little off to deaths doorstep within 12 hours.
She was hemorrhaging out both ends....It was touch and go for a month after release. I had to syringe feed her. If she had been older she would not have survived.

She is ok now. She is different... The whole ordeal changed her personality.

Not an experience I wish on anyone.

My dog was born in 2011 and has eaten cooked bones for years.. depends on if your dog is a horker who chews once and swallows or they chew it more.
