My dog, important question

My dog has seizure disorder. He's on meds. They made him gain weight for the past few years. Now lately the opposite. He's gotten skinny and we feed him alot now, but he seems to still be losing weight. What do you think is wrong? He's also never ending hungry, has lots of energy, and breaks the rules to get food, like taking stuff off the table, which he never did. Help

Does he have a periodic blood test to see if the seizure meds are in a therapeutic range? Sounds hyperthyroid, I assume dogs can have this? I'd check with the vet.

(Obvious Question) worms? I'm sure with all the care it's not, but only thing that comes to mind. I know when I was on steroids I ate non stop. Of course i got the fat face too. lol But I'm better now! Sorry I couldn't help.

I would have the blood work to check the levels of his seizure meds., a stool check for worms; also, is he on heartworm preventive?

Diabetes can cause weight loss even when they eat well. So can pancreatitis and colitis. With those you would see symptoms in the stool too. Parasites are always a possibility, and along with DM that would be the first two things to check for.

Since your dog has seizures, he might also have a liver defect. Those are congenital issues that can go hand in hand. And a liver shunt will cause weight loss. When a dog has one defect they are more prone to have others too. That might be a thought.

About thyroid issues-- do you see hair loss? That is a typical symptom of a thyroid issue in dogs.

My dogs are absolutely ravenous... and are doing such bad dog things....grrr.
So I added some extra to their food, just until it warms up. I am thinking the extra cold is doing it. We have not had weather like this in Florida in a very long time. We are not heating our house, and 19 degrees is 19 degrees, if you are in North Fl or Ontario.
How cold has it gotten down there for him? Is it a new colder experience?
I do hope he'll be fine, and this is just a 'glitch' easily solved for you all.

Hi, those are all the thoughts I had, thanks for reinforcing them.
He is an inside dog. We don't leave him out. We have not wormed him for the past 5 years, or given heartworm preventative just a blood test. These things give him more seizures. I will call the vet and make an appointment, and update the end of the week. Thanks!
