My dog is in a coma

A neighbor down the street found my puppy lying in the road and read the tag and brought her home to me. He said she lifted her head when he approached, and then she put it down and he said "it looked like she died" but he moved her out of the street and onto a grassy patch. Someone essentially hit my dog and then took off.

I grabbed a blanket and my bf went to get her. She seemed dead in his arms, but then all of a sudden she gagged, gasped for breath, and her mouth was moving. She writhed and started gagging and her eyes rolled into her head so we immediately ran to the vet down the street from us. She is so, so tiny...only 6 pounds at 10 months old and she literally squeezes through EVERYTHING and escapes.

The vet saw her before I even got the car parked, thank God. She is now breathing on her own with a strong heartbeat, but she was coming in and out of a coma. I think it's a good sign that she is breathing. They said that she has no signs of broken bones but they don't know if she may be neurologically damaged since she had no response when her toes were squeezed. (I think it may just be the fact she's not responding.) Her head was all crushed-looking and lumpy but it turns out it was bleeding on the skull which can be reduced. So she is in ICU and I miss her so much.

My dad keeps telling me it's my own bad karma because "I touched someone else's dog." The other day a dog jumped into my car and started loving me up after it ran in front of my car on a country road...it looked like it belonged to someone, but we couldn't find them so we brought her home and tried to return her to her owners 2 days in a row...but we DID return her to her thrilled owners. He keeps blaming me for my dog's misfortune. I am so sick to my stomach right now.

Oh - I am so sorry!! I'm glad you got her to the vet so quickly, and thank heavens your neighbor found her.

Your dad is 1 million percent wrong about what he's saying - you did absolutely nothing to cause this. Plus, your dad's being extremely mean for saying those things to you. I know you recognize that, but it still hurts to have a parent treat you like that. I'm sorry you're having to deal with that almost as much as I'm sorry for what's happened to your pup.

My 8-year-old JRT has been my faithful companion since my divorce almost 8 years ago. I would be devastated if anything bad happened to him, so I can imagine how you feel...I hope everything turns out okay for you and your dog.

I'm sorry, hun- and no, there's no way it could be your fault. Best wishes for a full recovery, but remember, these things take time.

This is her with my 90lb Black Lab...she is loving, and loved by everyone....I keep hoping maybe she was so tiny that someone didn't see her or feel her when they hit her. I just can't fathom the idea of someone being cruel enough to hit my dog and keep on driving. However, there's been a rash of people intentionally slamming into parked cars around here, so I hate to say it, I might have to be a pessimist on this one
