My dog is terrified

Could the postman have abused your dog in the past and your dog is afraid of him?

The post men eat puppy's for dinner, didn't you know that?

In all seriousness you dog may have had a bad experience, pepper spray, swatted...who knows.

no real harm in allowing your dog to cower from the postman really its not as though the post man is there all the time anyways so dont feel the need to force your dog to enjoy the postman.

I've had success with my puppy (now a little over 1 yr old) by giving a treat whenever a "scary" person comes around. Solomon comes to work with me every day, and used to get all barky and freaked out whenever a vender would come by. When I would hear a truck pull up, I'd say, "Solomon, want a treat?". He's very treat-driven, and easily distracted with treats. Might work with the mailman. Another approach is to have treats outside by the door. Ask the mailman if he wouldn't mind tossing a treat thru the mail slot (if that's what you have) and just leaving. No "Here ya go, pup", no acknowledgement of the dog - just toss a treat and leave. One of our venders brings treats every time, and Solomon gets all excited when he hears his truck pull up. The whole idea is to have the dog associate the scary thing with really good, happy thoughts! Good luck!
