my dog killed my pet chicken

I am so devasted my 2 year old lab/weimeraner, threw herself against the chicken wire repeatedly until it gave in, and killed one chicken and seriously wounded another. She did not eat the bird.

I am taking the wounded one to the vet today to see if she can be helped. The question is, the one that was killed was the leader of the pack, I had just introduced 2 new 1 year old chickens to this flock ( my flock is also a year old). So I have one original chicken that is not a leader and two new very timid birds, one that might not make it. Should i get new chickens and let them restart a pecking order? The original one seems to be so lost without her two buddies. I have the wounded one inside and keeping her safe and calm.

I really don't know what to do now and I'm so sick with my dog!

Any advice would help.

Oh, I'm sorry to hear your sad news. I would imagine, that now would be a good time to introduce a new chicken, since things have been stirred up a bit, and the pecking order will change anyhow.

So sorry this happened. You may be surprised that your formerly, happy to be second in line may now take over as head of the pecking order.
