I let my 12 week old chickens free range in our fenced paddock area and then put them to bed at night in their coop usually around 8:30/9:00ish since it stays light for so late nowadays. Tonight I got home from walking around 7:30pm and my dog let out one of her protective barks. I went to investigate and saw that she had treed a raccoon behind the barn, about 30 ft. away from where my chickens were free ranging. Yeah Krissy!!!

So, I guess that I have to put my chickens to bed earlier than I had been. Do you think that raccoon will come out earlier to try to get them?

good doggie!!! my neighbors dog is a beagle, and when you hear her bark, that means theres something out there! the coon will be back though.

to your dog! She deserves a big treat tonight! I'm new to chickens but I'd say that now that that coon knows where your chickens are you better go on the offense! 'Cause it's coming back.

jwchicklady I don't know about it coming out earlier for your chickens but it's going to be back tonight & so you know that right? I don't know what kind of set up you've got in the way of a coop but you want it securly *locked*. If you've got a latch a racoon will figure out how to open it.... hubby says anything a 5 yr. old can open so can a racoon.... I have key locks on my coop just for this I'd keep the dog in a place where it will smell it if it returns too...

Oh yea I almost forgot you want to kiss that dog & give her a big treat too! good girl!

The racoon will be back! Should have dispatched it while it was treed. They will wreak havoc on your chickens.

One just killed my old long haired pet cat this morning...pulled him out of the doghouse where he was sleeping right next to my front door and pulled his insides out.

These are the nastiest animals and the most macabre killers....will pull the heads off chickens through wire even.

Bizzybirdy saying I'm sorry isn't adequate but there's nothing else so I'll just say I'm so sorry to hear about your cat....
