i did not write picky, the forum hijacked it...HA! the forum wont let us call the glands what they acutally are. They are the glands in his rear end and they fill up with a very strong smelling, oily fluid that can slowly leak out into his fur and purfume the whole room
.... in case you wondered what the heck a picky gland was???
Funny, but serious. Our English bulldog was stinking, tried changing feed, bathing every couple of days, everything we could think of. We couldn't figure it out and made a trip to the vet and found out she has an internal screw tail. Now trying to figure out how to pay for a surgury that is going to cost at least $1,500 bucks.
I wondered why everyone was referring to the a n a l glands as "picky" glands- ha ha ha, now I get it!
I'm always reluctant to bathe a stinky dog- It's clear that he hasn't rolled in something nasty or gotten sprayed by something, right? He himself is the source of the odor? Whenever a dog has skin issues, the oil balance becomes even more important and stripping him of his oils is just going to upset the whole thing. Unless he has a yeast or other infection on his skin, the smell should lessen over time.
If he's got irritated skin and you feel like bathing him would soothe it, I use a tar-based shampoo that helps keep the moisture in a dog's skin (it's also great for treating and preventing hot spots).
