My dogs killed my chickens!

It will stop them when they know you are there, but will do nothing when they think or know you are not present. This is what is so wonderful about the shock collar, you can sit in the house and watch through the window and correct the dog. They think you are not there. To them, it is like being corrected by God and they will learn that they cannot mess with the chickens even when you are not present. Dogs are smarter than people give them credit for.

I have an electric fence that keeps my dogs out of the chicken area but does not keep the chickens out of the dogs area. I lost a hen several years ago when she came over the fence. I personally would never trust a dog unsupervised with chickens but I have seen some amazing stories on this site where dogs and chickens can live peacfully together.

i'm so sorry to hear that! that must be terrible.

when we got my ducks (all 4 babies) i had two cats and a dog to watch after. but my dog, Cuddles, LOVED the ducks. they were like her babies. she would go out and clean them and if we got too close she would growl to protect them. at first, the cats thought about trying their luck, but we would chase them away. they learned quickly to leave them alone. now the ducks are bigger than my cats and my dog and will jump on top of them and bite them if they get too close.

Your dog growl at you when you get too close...? Not a good sign.

Any dog can be trained to leave poultry alone, you need time, consistency and common sense.... sadly most people only have 2 out of 3.

True.............. this is why I don't have my own dog. The dog listed on my signature is my parents and they are on the other end of the property (1089ft to be exact). The dog never comes to my house or roam arround........it's a scaredy cat.

I won't own a dog until I am ready to dedicate a lot of time to it. I don't like to see dogs that are just cooped up all week and only get lovin on the weekend. They don't get enough training time. Same with horses, bugs me to no end to see the weekend cowboys over at a neighbors that boards them, its not fair to the horses. My donkies get worked atleast 5 days a week (the goats don't, they get moved every other week to mow down weeds).

Last summer when i first had chickens I only let my dog in the yard when I could watch her out the windw. Everytime sha got within 20 feet of the run I shocked her. She is pretty good now but i wouldn't allow her out when they are free ranging.

... bit different in my situation.. I have 3 dogs, they roam free with my chickens, goats, pigs, sheep, ducks and pigeons...
They are teritorial, so any predator/ uninvited critters better wish they meet me first before the dogs...

What a great picture of your animal family all together!

My dogs killed a few of my chickens when I first got them. Then if I was right there they ignored them. I couldn't trust most of my dogs with them though I do have a couple that are very good with them.

I ended up moving the chickens into the area with the goats and since the dogs are smaller than the goats they decided not to try to get them anymore. I also think they are safer at night being in with the goats. Time will tell but it seems to be working well.

I will not have any animal that I can not trust. I have dogs that I can trust and had some I could not.

Live peacefully or leave peacefully...

But, no animal has killed more of my chickens than the USPS!
