my duck has prolapse oviduct...Can anything be done

Hi..my duck has a proplasped oviduct. This is the second bout of it I have noticed. This is much worse than the first attack( if that is the right word). Can anything be done. She wont go in the duck house with the other ducks. I assume it is because they are pecking at it. Can she be saved. Please help, I am really upset about this as I have already lost two birds this year to a predator.

Well, it probably could be done, but I think it would require surgical skills, and you probably would need to find a veterinarian to do it. And it might be expensive.

I hope someone else will suggest something different that might not be so expensive or difficult.

I think the only thing you can do to cure it is surgery. However, a vet might figure something else out after checking the duck over.

If this is the second time it has happened with the same ducks- sadly it is likely to continue to occur in the future as well. You can clean the area and carefully try to get the prodruding part back into place- but as soon as it comes time to lay the next egg if not before then - it will more than likely prolapse again.

It is recomended that the area be cleaned well and gloves used for hygene reasons if attempting to help the duck yourself- but also you would need to do some reading and reasearch into exactly what needs to be done before attemping it yourself. - A vet may have a better idea - but you may find it hard to locate a vet who has treated a duck previously- and even less likely to find one that has treated a prolapse.

Separating her may be neccesary - and trying to break the current egg laying cycle she is in may help aid recovery as well. This may mean putting her into a darkened area to reduce the time of " daylight" she perceives each day.

Thanks guys for the suggestions, I am at my whits end here. To make matters worse I am not well myself today. I will try and set her up in one of the outbuildings. She is not approachable
but perhaps I can get her to go inside out of the intense heat. What do you suggest I clean the area with? just water or should I use something else. Any help she gets would have to come
from me as we dont have an avian vet here and the local vet is over 1/2 hour away.
