My ducking has gone missing - might the mum have hidden her?

My calls ducks had a duckling which came out today for the first time and has been missing all morning. A friend said sometimes the mum hides them to keep them safe but that doesn't sound right to me. Can anyone tell me if that might be the case or if something may have eaten it?
