my duckling is a unicorn?

I got a surprise crested too. He (I think he's a boy) is named Elvis. Just wait til it gets its feathers in. They look so funny. My neighbor called it an afro.

Typically the crest is caused due to a hole in the skull. A lot of crested birds can have neurological problems including seizures and something akin to retardation.

well this one has something coming out of its head, so maybe it is going to be ok....

Yes, crested birds always have feathers grow out of their head into a top-knot. It's still caused by a deformity of the skull. You're right, he may be completely fine. Not all experience this neurological problem, if memory serves I believe that some actually die in the shell and won't hatch, others are normal or no noticeable affects.

Having looked, yes, there is a percentage of ducklings that will die in the shell from a crested/crested mating due to a lethal gene.

Again, not stating that your bird will experience any of the problems associated with crested ducks (which incidentally isn't the same in crested chickens like Polish, etc.) just that it could happen.
