My order from Ideal came today. I ordered 5 Rouens, and I suspected that they may include a couple male chicks for warmth but I wasn't for sure. Wellllllll.... they did include male chicks for warmth, try EIGHT of them! They appear to be the same breed. They are all so darn CUTE!!!

I was trying to find the thread about having chicks and ducklings in one brooder but I can't seem to find it.

* What is my fellow BYCers take on keeping them together in one brooder?

* I know some of you have ordered ducklings from hatcheries, so what do you do with the extra little chicks that the hatchery includes in your box?
I already have 2 roos to my 13 hens, so I'm thinking I will probably have to rehome them once they are out of the brooder.

* Any ideas on the breed of the chicks in the last pic?

I have kept ducklings & chicks together, you just have to clean the brooder a lot more but it does help to have a waterer that they can't make too big a mess with.

I kept Muscovies & RSL chicks together (they were for easter last year) and they all did fine. Muscovies(some anyway) don't play in the water as much as other breeds.

The only BIG issue with chicks and ducklings in the same brooder is the rate at which ducklings grow: FANTASTIC. I mean, you can see the difference from the morning to the night! And webby feet stomp - inadvertantly - on wittle bitty chickies.

I put a hardware cloth barrier between my 2 ducklings and 4 chicks, in the same brooder. For about 2 weeks. Then the ducks needed far more room, so they got their own brooder.

My bathroom is very full with two brooders in it, but .... I don't mind.

Were you able to determine the breed in case someone asked? I have no idea what mine are. Or did the buyer even care? What would be a fair price to ask, $2.00?

I called the hatchery and also posted a pic on BYC to figure that out. What the hatchery told me at first didn't match what the BYC folks suggested, so then I emailed a photo to the hatchery, anyway I narrowed it down to two possible breeds but the buyer didn't care anyway. I sold five for $10.00. Here's the thread from last June https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=201965&p=1

Mine look like yours did! It does annoy me that they include all males as the 'packing peanuts', I mean honestly why would I want EIGHT roos??!

That is very strange. I had no idea that they did that. You're right-why the heck would ANYONE want 8 roos? Unless you have a pet python or something, that's an added burden that most people wouldn't want to have to deal with.
