My ducks got eaten last night..so upset!

I looked out at their little pen today and they were nowhere to be seen. I went to water them and all I could see were feathers. Apparentley the door that holds their pen on was slightly ajar and I guess a fox (another one..we shot one already) got in somehow. I feel so terrible as they had no where to escape. 2 got eaten in the fall and now the other 2 got eaten in the spring, not a great track record here. I didn't even take any current pictures of them. I am beyond upset today. I do have 5 eggs so I will try to hatch them.

I'm so sorry hon!! Don't be to hard on yourself, its not gonna get you anywhere whats done is done. Focus your attention on those eggs, and reinforcing everything for them!!

Oh No, I'm so sorry. Who knows if it was even a raccoon who figured out the latch. Lots of people have said they have better luck when they add some electric wire as a defense. Good luck with egg incubation.

So sorry! I've had this happen before (but it was a coyote) and it just feels terrible! I felt so guilty, but it was an accident!

I live in an area which has houses all around and really no trees..its the prairies. With all these predators around you would think I lived in the forest! A neighbor of ours was telling us he has seen 3 foxes around (we killed one already) and his 2 cats got eaten too! I assume because we got rid of the fox that would patrol our area a new one took over? I am so angry because it is my responsibility to be vigilant.

I candled my eggs today and could only see 1/4 with visible veins (after 7 days). I hope that the others hatch but it is hard to tell at this point. There were 3 more eggs in the nest which I will try to hatch although 2 of them had a bit of cracking (not through to the membrane). I will keep you updated on the progress.

You might need a better cage? Look at the bright side, you are learning how to take care of them better.
